Literacy

“Literacy unlocks the door to learning throughout life.”

“Acquiring literacy is an empowering process, enabling millions to enjoy access to knowledge and information which broadens horizons, increases opportunities and creates alternatives for building a better life.”

Kofi Annan

Literacy at Tudor covers Speaking and Listening, Phonics (Letters and Sounds), spelling, reading and writing.

We aim to develop competent and confident readers, writers and speakers.  Literacy is taught within our integrated curriculum, linking many subjects together, as well as a discrete subject.

Guided reading begins in the Nursery with picture books and as the children progress the books alter according to their needs.  Letters and Sounds lessons begin in Nursery and run through the school.  Speaking and Listening is an integral part of daily life at Tudor and children are given plenty of opportunity to listen to others and express their own opinions and ideas. Writing is integrated throughout the curriculum giving children different purposes for their writing.
